Overview

This Work-Study Certificate Programme is a 12-month work-study programme leading to the part-time Diploma in Applied Science (Aquaculture).

This is targeted primarily at fresh ITE graduates who want to deepen their skills and knowledge in the Aquaculture industry and operations. With Singapore’s drive towards AgriBusiness, there is a huge demand for graduates with skillsets in these areas.

Upon completing the 2 skills-based Modular Certificates (MC) under this programme, participants should be able to:

1. Apply basic concepts and principles of aquatic nutrition and feed development for various aquaculture species
2. Understand common causes of aquatic animal diseases transmission, identification and methods for diagnosing aquatic animal diseases
3. Apply the range of practices in managing broodstock, spawning aids, timing in production of juvenile animals, and hatchery hygiene
4. Apply concepts and principles of aquatic systems for recirculating systems in an aquaculture farm
5. Apply knowledge and skills on water quality and treatment in aquaculture systems

At the entry level, the job positions are Junior Aquaculture Technician (Trainee)[1].  Upon completing the course under the programme, a trainee can move on as a Junior Aquaculture Technician and finally as an Aquaculture Technician after completion of the diploma. They can also look forward to upgrading their knowledge and skills through further CET and executive programmes offered by local Institutes of Higher Learning.

Graduates may also look forward to wage increment and role expansion in their workplace, subject to their work performance.

Course Structure

Participants are required to complete a total of 2 skills-based Modular Certificates (MCs). Each MC can be completed in 1 semester, i.e. 6 months. A certificate will be issued once the requirements for each MC are met. Participants must complete the course within 12 months.

1. Modular Certificate in Aquaculture Sciences
a) Aquatic Animal Nutrition and Feed Development
b) Aquatic Animal Health and Disease Management
c) Hatchery Technology

2. Modular Certificate in Aquatic Systems and Mechanics
a) Basic Fluid Mechanics
b) Aquaculture Engineering
c) Water Quality Management

Upon completing the 2 MCs under this Work-Study Certificate programme, participants have the option to complete the remaining 3 MCs to obtain the part-time Diploma in Applied Science (Aquaculture):

3. Modular Certificate in Sustainable Aquaculture & Environmental Sciences
a) Environmental Sciences
b) Aquatic Ecology and Biodiversity
c) Sustainable Aquaculture

4. Modular Certificate in Aquaculture Technology
a) Seafood Post Harvest Technology
b) Global Perspective in Aquaculture
c) Application in Aquaculture

5. Modular Certificate in Aquaculture Management
a) Aquaculture Farm Management and Regulations
b) Business Economics
c) Enterprise Business Plan


Modes of Assessment

The assessment will be based on a combination of coursework components such as written and practical tests, case studies, assignments and projects.


Entry Requirements

Singaporeans or Singapore Permanent Residents who are within three years of either graduation from the ITE or the Operationally Ready Date for National Servicemen from the following full-time programmes are eligible to apply.

- NITEC in Chemical Process Technology
- NITEC in Applied Food Science
- Higher NITEC in Chemical Technology
- Higher NITEC in Biotechnology
- Other relevant science and engineering-related NITEC or Higher NITEC programmes

For NITEC graduates, there is a minimum GPA requirement of 2.0.
For Higher NITEC graduates, there is no GPA requirement.


Course Fees

Full Course Fees for WSCert (excluding GST)*: $7,524.00

MOE subsidy will not be applicable for students who repeat a module or semester.
Fees payable is based on per MC.
The course fees will be reviewed by MOE on an annual basis and adjusted accordingly.
